“TRINETRA” – A Powerful Blend of Mythology and 3D Animation | BVA Animation & Game Art Student Project

Reimagining Mythology in Modern Animation

In today's digital storytelling landscape, mythology continues to be one of the richest sources of creative inspiration. However, the real challenge for a modern animator is not just retelling ancient stories, but reimagining them with fresh perspective and depth.

My project, "TRINETRA," is a culmination of my journey at ICAT College of Design and Media, exploring the intersection of ancient Vedic mythology, character psychology, and advanced technical execution. Rather than being just a visual project, TRINETRA dives into the idea of "forgotten truths" hidden within familiar stories.

By focusing on Jalandhara, the narrative moves beyond the simple idea of good versus evil and instead presents a story filled with complexity and moral ambiguity.

TRINETRA: A Powerful Blend of Mythology, Animation, and Perspective

I. The Beginning: Setting the Mythological World

Every powerful story begins with a strong setting. In TRINETRA, the journey starts at Mount Kailash, a place that is not only physical, but symbolic. It acts as a bridge between the spiritual and physical worlds, untouched by time.

Here, Jalandhara is introduced not as a typical villain, but as a being born from divine imbalance. Created from Lord Shiva's wrath, he represents uncontrolled cosmic energy shaped into form. His character holds a powerful duality, divine origins combined with destructive intent, which ultimately defines his journey and downfall.

II. Challenging the Antagonist: The Rise of a Warrior King

What makes Jalandhara a compelling subject for animation is his perspective rather than just his power. Unlike traditional portrayals of Asuras as purely evil, he believes he is righteous and from his perspective, he is not entirely wrong.

In TRINETRA, he is portrayed as a warrior king who rules with:

  • Discipline and Intelligence: A strategic thinker who values order over chaos
  • Strong Leadership: His kingdom thrives under his rule, and he is respected by his people
  • A Perception of Truth: His faith in his own truth drives his actions, ultimately threatening cosmic balance

This layered portrayal encourages the audience to question what truly defines a hero or a villain.

III. The Narrative Catalyst: Introducing Arjun

To make the story more relatable, TRINETRA introduces Arjun, a modern-day character who acts as a bridge between the audience and the mythological world.

Arjun's role is vital for several reasons:

  • Relatability: Offering a human perspective to a larger-than-life story
  • Discovery: Allowing the audience to uncover Jalandhara's story through exploration
  • Bridge Between Eras: Linking ancient mythology with the present day

IV. The Technical Craft: From Concept to Final Render

A strong story needs an equally strong technical foundation. The creation of TRINETRA followed a detailed production pipeline using industry-standard tools:

  • ZBrush: Used for sculpting detailed character models, especially to highlight Jalandhara's dual nature
  • Substance Painter: Added realistic textures to enhance visual depth
  • Marvelous Designer: Helped simulate realistic clothing and fabric movement
  • Autodesk Maya: Used for scene composition, lighting, and final rendering

The project evolved from initial sketches to full cinematic sequences. Each challenge, whether maintaining visual consistency or handling complex rendering, contributed to improving the final output.

V. Conclusion: Mythology as a Reflection

TRINETRA is not just a retelling of Jalandhara's story; it is an exploration of how ancient narratives can be reshaped for a modern audience. By exploring characters that exist in shades of grey, the project highlights how mythology reflects real human emotions such as ego, belief, and balance.

It serves as a bridge between traditional stories and contemporary storytelling, proving that animation is a powerful medium to bring ancient narratives back to life in meaningful ways.

Showcase Experience: A Defining Moment

TRINETRA: A Powerful Blend of Mythology, Animation, and Perspective

Presenting TRINETRA at the 16th Graduate Showcase of ICAT College of Design and Media College was a defining moment in my creative journey. It was the first time I saw the result of three years of hard work through the eyes of an audience.

The most rewarding part was hearing people talk about Jalandhara not just as a monster, but as a king with a strong, though dangerous, point of view. That moment confirmed that I had achieved my main goal: not just to show a story, but to make the audience think as much as they watch.
