Explore how an ICAT College animation student reimagined the Ramayana during COVID-19 lockdown in "Quarantine Trouble." A creative journey blending mythology, storytelling, and modern animation techniques.
Finding Extraordinary Stories in Ordinary Times
I recently achieved a significant milestone in my creative journey, completing my Bachelor of Visual Arts in Animation and Game Art at the ICAT College of Design and Media in Bangalore. For my graduation project, I did not want to create a high-fantasy epic. Instead, my ambition was to craft a narrative that felt simple, relatable, and deeply rooted in a concept I understood personally.
I have always been fascinated by how familiar stories we grow up hearing, can be reimagined in contemporary contexts. This curiosity led to the creation of "Quarantine Trouble," an animated short film built on a compelling question: What if a pivotal moment from the Ramayana unfolded during the COVID-19 lockdown? By merging traditional themes with a contemporary setting, I aimed to build a story that was both clear in its execution and direct in its emotional resonance.

The Inspiration: A Modern-Day Lakshman Rekha
The core inspiration for "Quarantine Trouble" came from observing parallels between the global lockdown experience and mythological symbolism. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people across the world were confined to their homes, avoiding physical contact and enduring separation from loved ones.
This scenario strongly reminded me of the concept of the Lakshman Rekha—a boundary that must not be crossed for one's safety. During the lockdown, our homes became that boundary. Stepping outside meant risking health and security. This powerful connection became the conceptual foundation of my film.

Narrative Structure: A Story of Distance and Deception
The story is set in a familiar residential villa during the lockdown. The protagonist, Raghav, finds himself physically isolated from his family after traveling to another town for a job interview. He stays connected through phone calls and CCTV surveillance, experiencing family life from a distance.
Back home, his younger brother Lucky and his wife Bhoomika manage daily life under lockdown conditions. The conflict arises when Lucky is forced to step out for groceries after online services fail, a scenario many of us faced.
While Bhoomika is home alone, a man named Bali approaches the house, pretending to be a health inspector. This moment draws inspiration from the Ramayana, where Ravana disguises himself to deceive Sita. By adapting this classic narrative device into a contemporary scenario, I aimed to recreate a familiar tension in a modern context.
Balancing Tension with Realism and Humor
As Bali attempts his ruse, Raghav witnesses everything unfold through CCTV footage, attempting to warn his family remotely. This use of technology adds a layer of suspense without relying on high-intensity action. To keep the tone balanced, I introduced a moment of levity: Lucky's friend Bantu is stopped by the police for failing to wear a mask and helmet. This scene reflects the often-absurd yet relatable incidents that became part of everyday life during the lockdown.
The story concludes on a grounded note, with authorities intervening due to lockdown regulations. This resolution reinforces the core message: restrictions, though inconvenient, play a crucial role in ensuring safety.
Pre-Production & Visual Development
During the pre-production phase, my mantra was simplicity. I created mood boards and gathered references inspired by middle-class Indian households to ensure authenticity. The choice of an Indian-style villa helped ground the story in a familiar environment.
The character designs were intentionally realistic, avoiding exaggerated or overly stylized features. This approach ensured that the visuals aligned with the story's grounded tone. I also experimented with stylized texturing to give the film a distinct aesthetic while maintaining a clean and professional visual quality.
The storyboard served as the architectural blueprint for the film. It was here that I made critical decisions regarding camera angles and timing, ensuring a smooth narrative flow from the first frame to the last.
Solo Animation Pipeline Workflow
As the sole creator of this project, I was responsible for the entire pipeline:
- Modeling and Texturing: I developed characters and environments based on my references, focusing on detail and visual coherence.
- Rigging and Animation: Rigging ensured natural character movement, while animation brought the story to life.
- Time Management: One of my biggest lessons was understanding that perfection can hinder progress. Prioritizing key elements helped me complete the project efficiently within the given timeframe.

Learning, Feedback & Showcase Experience
Completing "Quarantine Trouble" was a profound learning experience that bridged the gap between creative vision and technical execution. By working through every stage of the process, I gained a holistic understanding of how a change in modeling might affect rigging, or how a lighting choice could alter the emotional weight of a scene. This journey significantly improved my workflow and helped me avoid common production pitfalls.
The feedback I received from peers and mentors at ICAT College was enlightening. While many appreciated the clever intersection of mythology and modern life, constructive criticism helped me identify areas for improvement, particularly in refining visual details and polishing animations. Showcasing my project at the ICAT Graduation Showcase held at Mantri Square Mall further enriched this experience both rewarding and insightful.
Conclusion: Artistic Growth & Career Direction
Quarantine Trouble reflects my evolving artistic identity, one rooted in simplicity, relatability, and purposeful storytelling. It reinforced the importance of thoughtful planning, consistency, and adaptability throughout the creative process. As I step into the professional animation industry, I carry these lessons with me, striving to continually refine my technical skills while staying committed to stories that resonate at a human level.
