More Than Just 5 Minutes on Screen
Creating a 5-minute 3D animated film may sound simple, but the reality behind it tells a completely different story. As a student of Multimedia Technologies at ICAT College of Design and Media, I had the opportunity to work on a short film titled Cake from the Crypt along with my teammates Blessy and Saam.
This project became a turning point in understanding how multimedia courses combine creativity and technical expertise to bring stories to life. From concept to final render, every stage demanded patience, precision, and teamwork.

From Idea to Story: The Foundation of Multimedia Learning
Every successful animation begins with a strong idea. What started as a simple concept quickly evolved into a structured narrative through brainstorming and story development.
As part of our multimedia course curriculum, we learned:
- Storyboarding and narrative design
- Visual storytelling techniques
- Character and environment planning
This phase showed us that behind every animation lies a well-thought-out creative process.
Modeling: Building the Visual World
Once the concept was finalized, we entered the modeling stage, one of the most technical aspects of 3D animation.
Using advanced lab facilities at ICAT, we:
- Created props with clean topology
- Refined models through multiple iterations
- Maintained visual consistency across scenes
This stage emphasized the importance of precision and structure in multimedia design.
Lighting: Setting the Mood
Lighting is not just about visibility—it defines the emotional tone of a scene.
For Cake from the Crypt, we aimed for:
- Bright, engaging visuals
- Balanced contrast and depth
- Proper focus on key elements
Achieving the right lighting required multiple tests and adjustments, reinforcing how critical this stage is in animation.

Animation: Bringing Characters to Life
Animation was the most exciting yet demanding phase. Since our film focused on humor, timing played a crucial role.
Key learnings included:
- Importance of timing and spacing
- Refining keyframes for natural motion
- Using exaggeration to enhance expressions
We realized that even a slight delay in movement could affect the entire scene's impact.
Rendering: The Most Challenging Stage
Rendering turned out to be more complex than expected. It required:
- Optimizing render settings
- Managing long processing times
- Fixing inconsistencies in lighting and materials
This stage taught us patience and technical problem-solving at a deeper level.
Editing & Compositing: Finalizing the Film
The final stage brought everything together. We worked on:
- Color correction
- Scene transitions
- Overall visual polish
Seeing all elements merge into a finished film was one of the most rewarding moments of the project.

What This Project Taught Us
Working on Cake from the Crypt helped us understand that:
- A short film requires weeks of effort and planning
- Every stage of the pipeline is interconnected
- Attention to detail defines the final output
- Team collaboration improves efficiency and creativity
Learning Experience
The feedback we received was incredibly encouraging, with viewers appreciating the humor, visuals, and overall execution of the film. This experience reinforced that multimedia courses go beyond tools, they help develop creative thinking, solve real-world challenges, and build industry-ready skills.
Presenting the project at the ICAT College Graduation Showcase at Mantri Square Mall was a significant milestone, where insights from faculty, industry professionals, and visitors validated our work and boosted my confidence.
This journey reinforced that while technical skills are essential, it is passion and creativity that truly bring ideas to life transforming the project into a reflection of my growth and future direction.
