Explore a Royal Heritage Jewellery Photography project by an ICAT student, showcasing traditional elegance through modern fashion photography techniques.
Introduction
I am Biswajit Sen, a final year Photography student at ICAT College of Design & Media. I wanted to create something that truly represents my creativity and interest in fashion photography.
For me, photography is not just about taking pictures, it is about telling a story, creating emotions, and presenting visuals in a meaningful way.
After exploring different ideas, I decided to work on a Royal Heritage Jewellery Fashion Photoshoot. Jewellery has always been a strong part of our culture, especially in India, where it represents tradition, beauty, and status. This inspired me to create a project that showcases traditional jewellery in a modern and cinematic way.
Why I Chose Jewellery Photography
Choosing jewellery photography was a natural decision for me because of my interest in fashion and styling. Jewellery photography is not only about showcasing products, it is about highlighting fine details, textures, and emotions. In today’s world, it plays a crucial role in branding, advertising, and social media.
A single powerful image can attract customers and create a lasting impression. Through this project, I aimed to understand how lighting, styling, and composition can enhance the visual appeal of jewellery and give it a premium look.
Project Concept: Royal Heritage Theme
The concept of my project is based on Royal Heritage, focusing on elegance, richness, and traditional beauty.
I wanted my images to feel inspired by royal families while maintaining a modern fashion photography style. The idea was to balance traditional aesthetics with contemporary visuals.
I used rich color palettes such as gold, red, maroon, and royal blue, as these colors symbolize luxury and royalty. My goal was not just to capture jewellery but to create visuals that tell a story and evoke a royal experience.
Research and Planning
Before starting the shoot, I conducted detailed research on traditional jewellery and its presentation in professional fashion photography.
I created mood boards and finalized color palettes to guide the shoot. This planning stage helped me decide on outfits, jewellery combinations, lighting setups, and background styles.
For example, I chose heavy jewellery pieces like necklaces, earrings, and bangles to create a strong royal look. I also selected outfits like saree or lehenga that match the theme perfectly.
Methodology: Working with Visual Elements
My approach was simple but organized. For each shoot, I focused on improving one element at a time so that I can understand its impact on the final image.
I experimented with:
- Lighting (soft light for smooth look, hard light for dramatic effect)
- Camera angles (close-up for details, medium shots for styling)
- Styling (arranging jewellery properly on the model)
- Background and props (to create a royal environment)
This method helped me improve my understanding of how each element affects the final result.
Photoshoot Experience
The photoshoot was a valuable learning experience.
For the main shoot, I focused on creating a luxurious and royal atmosphere. I carefully adjusted the lighting so that the jewellery shines naturally without appearing overexposed.
One of the biggest challenges was controlling reflections, as jewellery reflects light easily. I had to continuously adjust angles and lighting to achieve the desired effect.
Another important part was styling. I had to make sure that the jewellery, outfit, and makeup all match perfectly. Small changes in styling made a big difference in the final image.
Editing and Post-Processing
After completing the photoshoot, I edited the images using software like Photoshop and Lightroom.
Post processing helped enhance the overall quality of the images. I worked on:
- Color correction
- Brightness and contrast adjustments
- Skin tone refinement
- Removing unwanted elements
- Enhancing jewellery details
My aim was to maintain a natural look while adding a polished and cinematic finish.
Final Outcome
The final outcome of this project is a collection of fashion photographs that present traditional jewellery in a royal and modern style. These images not only reflect aesthetic appeal but also demonstrate my understanding of photography, styling, and visual storytelling. They can serve as a professional portfolio for fashion brands, jewellery businesses, and advertising campaigns.

This project was proudly presented at the ICAT College Graduation Showcase, where it was displayed alongside a diverse range of creative works. Presenting my work in a public space allowed me to observe how audiences engage with fashion photography and interpret visual narratives. It also gave me the opportunity to receive valuable feedback from peers, faculty, and industry professionals.
Conclusion
This project is more than just a final year assignment, it is a reflection of my passion for photography and fashion. Throughout this process, I gained significant insights that contributed to my growth as a photographer. I developed a deeper understanding of the importance of research and planning, the impact of lighting in jewellery photography, and the role of styling in enhancing visual appeal. Managing an end-to-end photoshoot also strengthened my ability to organize and execute creative ideas effectively. In the future, I aim to build my career in fashion and jewellery photography, and this project marks the beginning of that journey.
