My Journey into Track Bike Racing Photography

“Speedway” Track Bike Racing Photography Project | B.Sc Photography Student Project

There’s a moment just before a race begins, engines rumbling, adrenaline rising, and time itself seeming to hold its breath. That moment became the heartbeat of my final year project, "Speedway."

As a final-year Photography student at ICAT College of Design & Media, I wanted to explore a space where unpredictability meets precision, where storytelling unfolds in fractions of a second. Automobile photography, particularly track bike racing, offered exactly that.

Through this project, I didn’t just photograph machines in motion, I found myself drawn into a world of raw human emotion. Riders balancing fear and focus, mechanics working with quiet intensity, and spectators living every turn, each frame became a story waiting to be told. Capturing speed wasn’t just technical; it was deeply emotional, requiring me to anticipate moments rather than simply react to them. This journey pushed me to understand how motion, energy, and human spirit can coexist in a single still image, transforming photography into a powerful narrative medium.

Understanding the World of Racing

Before beginning the photography process, I spent time researching INMRC-style racing photography and the techniques used by professional motorsport photographers. Racing environments are extremely challenging for photographers because everything happens within seconds. Timing, positioning, and camera settings all play a crucial role in capturing the right moment.

In order to truly understand the sport, I did not limit myself to observing races from the outside. I attended training sessions where bikers are taught about racing tracks, safety rules, and riding techniques. These sessions helped me understand the discipline and technical knowledge required to become a professional racer.

I also had the opportunity to join riders during their track reconnaissance (recci) sessions, where they study the layout of the track before racing. Watching riders carefully examine corners, braking points, and racing lines gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of the sport. Being present during these moments also helped me anticipate where important photographic moments might occur during the race.

Challenges in Access and Permissions

One of the biggest challenges I faced was gaining access to professional racing tracks. Racing circuits are highly controlled environments where safety is the top priority. Photographers must follow strict guidelines regarding positioning and shooting during races.

Convincing authorities to allow a student photographer required patience and persistence. However, gaining access became a valuable learning experience, allowing me to observe professional racing environments up close.

The tracks where I conducted my photography include:

  • MMRC (Madras Motor Race Track), Chennai
  • High Coast Racing Circuit, Coimbatore
  • Aruani Grid, Bangalore

Each location presented unique challenges and perspectives, helping me experiment with different approaches to motorsport photography.

Telling the Story of a Race

Rather than capturing isolated moments, I structured my project as a narrative that reflects the emotional journey of a race day.

Before the Race

The moments before a race are filled with anticipation and focus.

I captured riders praying, stretching, and preparing mentally, along with mechanics fine-tuning bikes. Tire smoke and engine warm-ups created powerful visual scenes that reflect calm before the storm.

The Race in Motion

Once the race begins, the track transforms into a high-energy environment filled with speed and competition.

I photographed:

  • Riders accelerating from the starting grid
  • Dramatic cornering angles
  • Overtakes and group racing chaos

Sparks, near-misses, and occasional crashes added intensity to the story. Capturing these moments required patience and the ability to anticipate where the action would happen next.

After the Finish Line

The moments after the race reveal the emotional side of motorsport. Riders celebrate victories, teams congratulate each other, and fans cheer loudly from the stands.

Some images show riders crossing the finish line with triumph, while others capture podium celebrations where winners receive their trophies. At the same time, there are quieter moments as well, such as a mechanic consoling a rider after a difficult race.

Creative Techniques I Explored

To capture the essence of speed and intensity, I experimented with multiple photography techniques:

  • Low-angle shots to enhance power and dominance
  • Silhouette photography using strong backlighting
  • Motion blur to visually communicate speed
  • Reflection photography using surfaces like puddles and visors
  • Zoom burst effect to create dynamic motion streaks

These techniques helped translate the energy of racing into compelling visual storytelling.

Conclusion: Turning Speed into Storytelling

Working on the Speedway project was both exciting and challenging. From training sessions to live racing events, the journey helped me understand motorsport from both technical and emotional perspectives, strengthening my ability to handle fast-moving subjects, anticipate decisive moments, and use creative techniques effectively.

Most importantly, it showed me how photography can transform high-speed action into meaningful stories. As I conclude "Speedway," I realize this project has been more than photography, it has been about perspective. Speed is not just velocity; it is emotion — anticipation, tension, triumph, and even heartbreak. At ICAT College of Design & Media, where creativity meets industry-driven learning, this project became a platform to turn theory into real-world experience, culminating in its presentation at the ICAT College Graduation Showcase. Speedway is ultimately my attempt to freeze chaos into clarity, to turn motion into meaning, and to remind viewers that behind every racing machine lies a human story worth capturing.
